Government funded Care services for older Australians include:
This is a government program that helps older people stay in their homes. It offers various services like help with daily tasks, personal care, and social activities. These services are tailored to the individual’s needs.
The government funds approved service providers to offer these services, and the cost is often based on the person’s financial situation. CHSP aims to support older Australians and delay the need for more intensive care in nursing homes or other facilities.
Who provides the services?
Approved providers collaborate with care recipients to plan, organize, and deliver Home Care Packages.
Who is eligible?
The program helps older people with complex needs stay at home. To access it, they must register with My Aged Care and undergo an assessment to check their eligibility. If eligible, the government will inform them of the approved level of their Home Care Package (Package levels 1, 2, 3 & 4).
How the program works?
The government assigns Home Care Packages to people – not providers. This means a person can choose a provider in their area that best meets their needs. It also means the person can take their package with them if they want to change providers.

The government prioritises people who are approved for a package in- the national priority system.
There is a lot of demand for Home Care Packages. A person may need to wait for a while before they get a package assigned to them.
Residential aged care is designed to support elderly Australians who require assistance with daily living and can no longer maintain their independence in their own homes. The Australian Government allocates funding to ensure that residential aged care services are both cost-effective and readily available. Residential care can be provided in two ways: on a respite basis or a permanent basis.
Respite Care: This is a temporary form of residential care offered to provide a short break for primary caregivers. It allows individuals to stay in a care facility for a limited period, often ranging from a few days to a few weeks. The primary purpose is to offer relief to caregivers and ensure that individuals receive care during the caregiver’s absence. After the respite period, individuals typically return to their usual caregiving arrangement.
Permanent Care: Permanent residential care, on the other hand, is a long-term arrangement. Individuals who require ongoing assistance with daily activities and cannot live independently at home opt for permanent care. They reside in the care facility on a continuous basis, receiving the necessary support, personal care, and healthcare services for an extended period or until their care needs change significantly.
These two options cater to different needs and circumstances, with respite care offering temporary relief to caregivers and permanent care providing a stable and ongoing living arrangement for individuals who require constant support and supervision.
